(not hailed on): Bright medium red. The nose shows a slight roasted ripeness along with a faint animal character. Ripe and vinous, with strong black cherry fruit framed by surprisingly healthy acidity. Very firmly built wine with a solid backbone of acids and tannins.

(no hail here; 25% new oak): Good deep red. Rich aromas of black raspberry and bitter chocolate. Sweet and concentrated, with strong but harmonious acidity nicely buffered by the wine's mid-palate flesh. Dominant flavor of black cherry. This was the last Pinot Noir fruit Lafon harvested in 2013.

The 2013 Monthélie les Duresses has a light but pure raspberry leaf and strawberry-scented bouquet that wafts gently from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a decent structure, with a sharp, pointed, tart cherry finish. What you might call a "pretty little thing."

No hail here in 2013. Spring bottling planned. Lovely light juicy stuff. Racy and very light but very pure. Precise bitter cherries. (JR)
