Winemaker Mounir Saouma's main business is Lucien Le Moine in Burgundy, and the 2013 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc Magis reveals much of those same sensibilities. It's fermented and matured in oak without being dominated by it and boasts surprisingly crisp acids and medium body for Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The result is a wine built on finesse and length rather than raw power, although it doesn't lack for intensity. Spiced tangerine zest and Asian pear notes are underscored by vibrant acids that power the laser-focused finish. Not many white Châteauneufs benefit from aging, but this one practically demands it.

(fermented and aged in used demi-muids for two years): Pale gold. Displays intense tangerine, pears skin, iodine and exotic floral scents, complicated by building mineral and fennel nuances. Sappy, impressively concentrated orchard and pit fruit flavors show outstanding focus and a refreshingly spicy touch of candied ginger. Finishes smooth, subtly smoky and remarkably long, leaving an echo of candied pear behind. This wine was one of the highlights of my annual trip to the region and, in the context of truly world-class white wines, it's a serious value.
