Bright red-ruby. Musky, brooding aromas of dark fruits, cola, red licorice and flowers. Like liquid velvet in the mouth, conveying superb chocolatey depth to the blackberry and black cherry fruit. Remarkably dense in the style of the vintage's better examples--and very rich and ripe for Chambolle--but there's enough energy here to give definition to the middle palate. Finishes classically dry and long, more savory than sweet, with thick, dusty, seamless tannins coating the front teeth.

Ruby-red. Aromas of black raspberry, blackberry, licorice and noble minty greenness reminded me of Clos Vougeot. Juicy and tightly wound; a bit reduced but very pure. Solidly structured wine with little in the way of early sweetness. In fact, this is remarkably primary and reserved for Charmes from a warm vintage. Finishes saline and firmly tannic, very much in need of more élevage . A wine of quiet power--but will it blossom in bottle? (Incidentally, Saouma topped his Chambolle cuvées with lees last summer to protect them against oxidation. He noted that Chambolle wines are very sensitive both to long maceration and to exposure to oxygen.)
