Score 88/100 · Drink 2018-2022, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Sep 2017

Pale, bright yellow. Sexy scents of pear, apple, herbs, spices, menthol and crushed stone. Fatter and riper in the mouth than the Saint-Aubin, with a yellower cast to its stone and orchard fruit flavors. Less exotic than it appeared to be from barrel a year ago, in spite of its elevated alcohol (14% on the label), but still a bit heavy-handed. Some CO2 is keeping it fresh but this is ultimately a wine of moderate depth, from vines planted in 2000.

Cask sample. Young vines – planted 2004, mass selection. Mixed red and white soils. Just 10% max new oak. Good attack. Precise and racy start though not that much concentration on the palate. Falls away a bit on the end. (JR)

(these vines were planted in 2000 using a sélection massalle from Puligny-Montrachet): Slightly exotic scents of pineapple, yellow flowers and lichee. Large-scaled, rich and sweet, even a bit aggressive today, showing notes of menthol, mint, anise and white pepper. Today the wine's fruit is in the deep backward. Finishes a touch bitter. (Carillon's Chassagne-Montrachet villages was too reduced and edgy to rate.)
