Score 91+/100 · Drink 2020-2027, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Sep 2017

Bright yellow-gold. Sexy hazelnut and marzipan notes meld with minerals, nutmeg and allspice on the nose. Densely packed and a bit unforthcoming but smooth, with its sweetness more successfully buffered by stony minerality than most of these 2015s. But a bit youthfully disjointed in the early going, and quite powerful and chewy on the finish. Still a touch of bitterness. Here the fruit is covered by minerality in the early going. Extended aeration brought a much creamier texture and a more exotic orange oil element.

(Leroux presented this wine before his Chassagne premier crus; two barrels out of five were new): Sexy musky scents of acacia blossom, hazelnut and crushed-stone minerality; very complex and subtle. Deep, rich and dry, showing surprising acidity to its tactile mineral and nutmeg flavors. Finishes powerful, even a bit aggressive, in a distinctly masculine style. The pH is here is a fairly low 3.18 and this wine is still holding 3.8 grams of residual sugar, which I never would have guessed owing to its buffering minerality.
