Bright yellow-straw. Apple, flowers and a touch of smoky minerality on the laid-back nose. Tactile, dry and saline in the mouth, with white peach, underripe pineapple and flint flavors given shape by a firm spine of stony minerality and acidity. A very solid basic Saint-Véran bottling with some life ahead of it.

The 2014 St Veran comes from 17 growers and one-third of the crop is raised in new 500-liter barrels. It has a satisfying bouquet with Granny Smith apples and a hint of orange blossom, perhaps more enticing than the 2014 Mâcon-Lugny. The palate is linear and crisp, very fine acidity here with a tang of sour lemon that enlivens the finish. It's just a little smudged right on the end, but otherwise this is well worth looking up.

13 months in oak/tank. Bottled. Lightly spiced citrus and green fruits. Dry, fresh, not much depth but balanced. (JH)
