Pale-medium garnet. Potpourri scent, with fresh earth, tar touches and a core of ripe red fruit beneath – really attractive nose. Brisk acidity and fresh red fruit both give way to a firm core of ripe, resolving tannins and a fairly long, rose-scented finish. (TJ)

The 2012 Barolo Bricco Delle Viole is a dark and generous wine with classic lines. Mario Marengo is known for traditional and age-worthy Barolos that show best after at least ten years of cellaring. But this vintage is immediately attractive and soft with dark fruit nuances that are followed by spice, leather and balsam herb.
Just mid ruby with orange tinges. Profound and concentrated on the nose yet with purity and, surprisingly for Marengo, no oak impact. Elegant, yet pretty much closed palate with firm powdery tannins. Still a little monolithic on the finish, but it will have a great future. (WS)
