With a history dating back to 1557, La Haye is one of the oldest estates in St Estèphe. Showing plenty of depth and power, tannins a little chunky, but delivers a nuanced mix of blackberry, liqourice root, reaspberry leaf and slate. 46% new oak, 12 months for Merlot, 14 months for Cabernet Sauvignon. Eric Boissenot consultant, along with Marc Quertinier.

A friendly St.-Estèphe that has a ton of ripe redcurrants and mint that masks the tannins on the medium-bodied palate, until the muscularity of the wine charges through at the finish. A blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot and malbec. Better from 2020.

The 2016 Le Haye has a playful bouquet with orange sorbet laced red berry fruit, more open and generous than its appellation peers. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple tannin. This is quite saturated in style, with candied orange peel lacing the pretty, almost Margaux-like finish. This is a delight. Tasted at the Cru Bourgeois tasting in London.

50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Merlot. Excellent nose, which has so much black fruit and spice on offer! Chewy tannic texture that is very approachable now but will develop well. Pristine black fruit on the palate, with aniseed and liquorice on the finish. Should age beautifully. (RH)
