(13% alcohol; this is a second wine to Sophia; Te Kahu means "the cloak," which is a reference to the local fog): Bright ruby-red. Black plum, licorice, graphite and a minty nuance on the nose. Surprisingly fine-grained in the mouth, displaying moderate flesh and depth and an enticing touch of sweetness. Finishes with smooth tannins. Reminded me of a Bordeaux from the Right Bank. This should make a good steakhouse wine.

A blend of Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, the 2013 Te Kahu has a medium to deep garnet-purple color and cedar laced nose with toasty notes of the blackberry and black cherry core plus a waft of roses. Medium-bodied, the palate has a firm structure boosted by the oak and relatively modest youthful black fruit flavors, finishing oak dominant. It should give a lot of pleasure when / if that oak marries-in.

Attractive smoky palate and superbly ripe fruit. There's also a cedar character and leafiness that integrates well, and with the savoury snap on the finish there is more than a passing resemblance to good Bordeaux. (RH)
