Elia Loia’s 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is a deeply-colored wine that offers a pretty, aromatic nose with dried fruit, leather, spice tobacco and smoked bacon. The medium-bodied frame shows polished tannins and shorter persistence compared to recent vintages. This wine should be at its finest within the next few years. Drink: 2015-2020. Concentrated deep ruby with narrow orange rim. Nutmeg, undergrowth and a hint of cherry fruit. Sweet fruit palate marked a little by oak. Grainy tannic structure gives a welcoming contrast to the sweet ripe fruit. Needs more time to shed all that sweet youthfulness. Just a little warm on the finish. (WS)
