Nicolas Rossignol's 2015 Volnay Village is superb, offering up a lovely bouquet of smoky red and black fruit, dark chocolate, violets and grilled squab. On the palate, the wine is velvety, medium to full-bodied and succulent, with a deep core, a fine-grained chassis of tannins and a penetrating finish. This Volnay—which was almost lubriciously decadent from barrel—has already shut down since bottling and its structural elements are beginning to come to the fore, so plan on cellaring this for several years before pulling corks in earnest.

(100% destemmed): Medium red. Liqueur-like raspberry, brown spices, mocha and a hint of leather on the very ripe nose. Then dense and thick on the palate, conveying a subtle sweetness and surprising vinosity to its sexy flavors of raspberry, game, leather and dried flowers. This classically dry, very serious village wine finishes with a firm spine of tannins and lovely energy from limestone.
(entirely destemmed): Healthy bright red. Aromas of strawberry, raspberry and chocolate show modest lift today. A plush, lower-toned village wine with an easygoing texture to its flavors of redcurrant, plum, leather and earth. Finishes with substantial ripe tannins and a slight tiredness.
