Bright medium red. Very tight, high-pitched aromas of raspberry, red licorice, wild herbs, flowers and crushed-rock minerality; a real essence of young Musigny. Then surprisingly layered and expressive in the mouth, with its perfumed raspberry, strawberry and saline soil flavors given punch by superb mineral-driven energy. This is sweeter and more open-knit than the Amoureuses today but every bit as precise and delineated as that wine. Finishes with noble, seamless tannins and palate-staining length. Stunning potential here.

The 2016 Musigny Grand Cru was 60% destroyed by frost and includes whole-bunch fruit, not least just to fill the small tank. You can feel those stems on the nose and maybe it just obscures the terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, fine acidity but I felt there was some dryness and chewiness on the finish. I can’t help thinking that this Musigny cannot forget the trauma of the frost. Distracted? Let’s see how it turns out in bottle.
