Score 90/100 · Drink 2010-2026, Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, Oct 2016

The 2005 Gigondas was made from tiny yields (23 hectoliters per hectare) and is a beautiful, age-worthy wine that's still not yet fully mature. Cassis, basil, leafy herbs, pepper and licorice all emerge from the glass, and this medium to full-bodied red has notable freshness, purity and length. It has at least another 8-10 years of longevity.

Bright red. Wonderfully complex and seductive bouquet of strawberry, dark cherry, garrigue and baking spices. Supple red and dark berry flavors are gently supported by soft acidity, finishing with building power and lightly chewy tannins. Shuts down with air, but not before revealing very serious material. This should turn out to be outstanding.

Dark red. Pungent floral and raspberry aromas are pure and energetic. Tangy red berry flavors are sharpened by a zesty mineral quality. This fleshed out nicely with air, picking up cherry and bitter chocolate flavors on a long, creamy finish. (My sample of '04 was extremely reduced.)

Rather heady, rusty nail character – very gamey. Very sweet and a bit jammy. Bit metallic on the end. (JR)
