Score 93-95/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Jan 2018

(more than 50% of the potential crop was lost to frost; vinified in a new 3.5-hectoliter barrel with 50% whole clusters; one-third of these vines were planted in 2010): Bright, saturated medium red. Knockout perfume of cranberry, pomegranate, raspberry and white pepper. Vividly high-pitched and fine-grained in the mouth, with its penetrating, floral red fruit flavors accented by pungent crushed-stone minerality. Delivers outstanding intensity without weight, not to mention superb inner-mouth tension and saline complexity. This fabulously perfumed wine finishes with terrific rising length. This wine may not have the volume or power of the Combe d'Orveau but I suspect it will dance on its sibling's grave.

Cask sample. 50% stems. Light to mid cherry red. A little less open than the Beaux Bruns. As with the Nuits-St-Georges Aux Chaignots, you can see the inclusion of stems on the nose in a lightly herbal character but it is not in the least unripe, just fragrant – it opens delightfully in the glass. Dry finesse and long, scented fruit on the palate. Super-refined. Needs time. (JH)
