Score 94/100 · Drink 2020-2026, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jan 2018

The 2016 Pinot Noir McDougall Ranch is the most complete and alluring of these wines. Powerful, deep and resonant in the glass, the 2016 captures all the elements that make Jamie Kutch's wines so compelling. Smoke, tar, incense and savory herbs wrap around a core of black cherry fruit in this layered, powerful wine. I would prefer to give the 2016 at least a few years in bottle.

Pale crimson. Pretty discreet, slightly 'wet stony' nose but you can tell there is quite a bit underneath struggling to get out (cf the Bohan Vineyard Pinot 2016). Rather heady in fact on a second sniff. Very fine tannins counterbalanced beautifully with really lively red fruits and violets. Great balance without great alcohol. Very fine texture. (JR)
