The 2016 Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru les Baudines has a tightly coiled bouquet that is less expressive than the Les Embazées at the moment. There is a nuttiness here that renders it not unlike a Meursault. The palate is well balanced with a crisp line of acidity, harmonious and poised with a subtle touch of ginger toward the pretty finish. This is a success considering the difficult growing season.

20% new oak. Light and fresh on the nose. Juicy and fruit-filled but not at all complex yet. Lightly like fermented lemon cough sweets but more chewy than tense. (JR)
(45 hectoliters per hectare produced; no new oak used): Bright medium yellow. Lemon, pear and white flowers on the ripe nose. At once thick and savory, conveying terrific texture to its almost honeyed stone fruit flavors lifted by flowers. Finishes with a slowly building whiplash of flavor. Leroux used just one-third one-year-old barrels, and the rest older, explaining that Baudines is a cooler site and he "didn't want to kill the floral character with wood."
