Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Girolate is a little closed to begin, revealing subtle red and black plums, boysenberries and black raspberry notes with wafts of forest floor, truffles and cedar chest. Medium to full-bodied, it has a firm, fine-grained texture and bold freshness lifting the muscular fruit to a long finish.
The 2017 Girolate comes across as reticent on the nose despite encouragement. The palate is the opposite: fleshy and outgoing on the entry with plush red fruit and a silky smooth, quite substantial and persistent finish. Allow this a couple of years for the nose to open and I am sure you will find a fine Girolate.
Falling under the Despagne umbrella, the 2017 Chateau Girolate is a beautiful, classy wine that does everything right. Lots of cassis, toasted bread, vanilla, and unsmoked tobacco all emerge from the glass, and it's medium to full-bodied, pure, polished, and elegant on the palate, with just subtle background oak. It's a beautiful wine, especially in the vintage.
