The 2017 La Sirène de Giscours has really come along nicely since I last tasted it in barrel. Cabernet Franc signatures are especially evident today, with a whole range of floral and savory accents that perk up the red berry fruit. Bright, aromatically explosive and silky, this mid-weight Margaux has a lot to recommend it, including its distinctive personality.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 La Sirene de Giscours gives up pretty red and black cherries, cassis and fragrant earth notes with wafts of dried herbs and underbrush. Medium-bodied, it is delicately played, refreshing and soft with a fragrant finish.

The 2017 La Sirene de Giscours, matured in 25% new oak for slightly less duration than usual, has a clean and pure bouquet with blackberry, tobacco and a touch of spice. The bouquet is quite “gentle” and unfolds gradually in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, very well balanced with moderate depth and shows impressive harmony from start to finish. There is nothing spectacular here, rather just a delicious deuxième vin that is going to (hopefully) represent great value.

55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. Greyish crimson. Peppery and a little leafy on the nose. Light, fine texture and lovely freshness. Really rather delicate and attractive persistence. Fine-boned. Delicate granite scent and a light touch to the tannins. Refined and fresh. (JH)
