Score 89-91/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Jan 2018

(finished its malo before the 2017 harvest): Dark ruby-red. Pungent mineral lift to the aromas of blackberry, dark raspberry, violet and licorice. Tangy black fruit flavors are tight but fine-grained, conveying an impression of brisk acidity. Despite a mineral pungency, there's also a velour-like quality here if not a lot of early complexity. Finishes with firm, slightly edgy tannins and good sneaky persistence. Cheurlin says this is his most accessible 2016 premier cru but it still needs some time to expand.

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes, which includes around 20% to 25% whole bunch fruit, has a very elegant, restrained bouquet that just lets the blackberry and raspberry fruit flow from the glass, the oak neatly integrated and not imposing. The palate is medium-bodied with a saline entry. Again, I appreciate the purity of fruit, the finesse and the charm of this Vosne-Romanée. There is plenty of crunchy red berry fruit on the finish and a pinch of spice. Super bon, as they say in France.
