Pale yellow. Pungent scents of citrus peel, pear, menthol and powdered stone, plus a suggestion of red berries. Moderately dense, saline and classically dry, offering good intensity and firm mineral-driven acidity but conveying an impression of restraint to its fruit component. Finishes firm, with a youthful citric edge that calls for at least a couple years of patience. A bit inscrutable today. This wine was virtually unchanged with 72 hours in the refrigerator, maintaining its firm edge.

The 2016 Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Clos St Jean, the parcels tucked into the village more or less, has a well-defined nose of orange pith and a subtle smear of dried honey. The palate is well balanced with a lightly honeyed texture, veins of tropical fruit with hints of mango and passionfruit toward the finish. This is a generous Chassagne-Montrachet that will give much pleasure in its youth.
