Drink 0-0, Neal Martin, Aug 2020

The 2016 d’Aiguilhe has a perfumed, Merlot-driven, floral bouquet of blueberry and black cherry fruit, more open-knit than its peers and the oak nicely integrated. The palate is ripe and corpulent, almost jammy on the entry, quite low in acidity, and lacks a bit of grip and backbone on the finish. I was expecting a better showing than this. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Tasted blind. Rather luscious fruit, fairly evolved nose, and a fair whack of sandpaper tannins. Acid finish. (JR)

85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc. Very rich and sumptuous on the nose. Round and well balanced. Very fine tannins. Very successful. Hint of some floral soap?! But really pretty impressive. Lots packed in there. GV (JR)

The 2016 Château d'Aiguilhe checks in as 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc brought up in 30% new barrels before being bottled with no fining. As with the white, it has brilliant limestone character as well as vibrant strawberry and black raspberry fruits, hints of violets and flowers, background oak, and medium to full-bodied richness. It’s a balanced, high-quality 2016 well worth seeking out. Drink it over the coming 15 years or so.
