Tasting notes
More protected than the Ihringer Vorderer Winklerberg; south-south-west facing. More loess as it picks up the eroding soils. Vinification in open-top fermenters in oak, punch down by hand once a day and remontage twice a day, 27 days on skins. Aged in 100% new French oak for 18 months. No fining, filtering or pumping. Beautiful fruit on the nose, with a baked plum and cherry blossom florality and sweetness. Rose petals. Amazing concentration! Pomegranate molasses. Heavy silk, brocade texture. Sensuous, bold, dramatic. Flaring and prancing like a Lipizzaner thoroughbred horse. But then there is this deep, quiet undertow of earth and concrete dust and rain shadows. (TC)

The 2016 Achkarren Schlossberg Spätburguder GG is pure, deep and fresh on the nose, provided with concentrated cherry aromas and almost crystalline terroir flavor from the volcanic soils of the steep Schlossberg. Full-bodied, silky and fresh, this is an intense and spicy, racy and stimulating Pinot with firm and refreshing tannins, good grip and precision in the long finish. Tasted during the preview of the GG wines in Wiesbaden in August 2018.
Heger uses oak and does not hide it, smoky and roasted notes dominate the fragrance. But there is more than wood to the palate with juicy plum and dusty minerality challenging for equal billing with the spicy and toasted notes of barrique ageing. Burly kind of Spätburgunder fellow with solid tannins. (MS)
