I have drunk fabulous vintages of the Meursault Clos des Ambres in the past, yet the 2016 is not one of them. Why? There is just too much reduction on the nose that completely obliterates the sense of terroir. It's just too much. The palate is, thankfully, much better, with superb tension, impressive concentration, and a taut, linear finish that I love. Yet even returning to my glass after a couple of hours, the reduction squats over this Meursault refusing to budge. Tasted at the Meursault dinner in Hong Kong.

This is a selection from En l’Ormeau. Lightly smoky/struck-match nose. Very solid and more approachable than in some years. Big and bold. Almost daring you to drink it. Massive shoulders and muscle! (JR)
