(just 8 barrels produced from 1.6 hectares, or just under 12 hectoliters per hectare; from vines picked late): Bright, dark red. Subdued scents of black cherry and mocha complicated by licorice and herbs. Boasts good stuffing but the kirsch and chocolate flavors show limited early sweetness and the wine is dominated today by its chewy tannic structure. Boasts sound juicy acidity but comes across as somewhat austere in the early going. This wine will need some time in bottle to gain in sweetness.

There are usually 27 to 30 barrels of the 2016 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode, but this year there are only eight. It has quite a lifted bouquet with black cherries, bilberry jam and some blue fruit, although without the harmony of others. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy red fruit, a little rustic compared to Bruno’s other 2016s, a tang of marmalade complementing the red berry fruit on the slightly curtailed finish. Not bad, though I have encountered better in less tricky growing seasons.

From 100-year-old vines. They have more than 1 ha here. This vineyard was never struck by lightening but in the last three years they’ve had hail, frost and hail again. They separate their oldest vines into Les Jarrons. Bright crimson. Grainy and fresh. Real excitement here. Easy to appreciate but with lots of tannin. (JR)
