Score 88/100 · Drink 2018-2025, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Apr 2017

The 2014 Seriously Old Dirt is the third release and comes from parcels that show well when young, but do not blend with the Series M or Series C. This year it is a blend of 41% Merlot, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Merlot, matured in French oak for 22 months. It has a ripe, voluminous bouquet with small dark cherries, cassis and violet aromas, straightforward yet with pleasing purity. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannin, plenty of black cherry, blueberry and a pinch of sea salt, with a spicier, clove-tinged finish that lingers nicely in the mouth. Whilst it does not possess the structure of the Series M or Series C, this serves as a perfect introduction to Vilafonté.
