Score 90-92/100 · Drink 2016-2023, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Dec 2014

The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes has a perfumed, floral bouquet with pure fresh strawberry, Morello and hints of vanilla pod emerging from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with the finest of Thierry Glantenay’s tannins in 2013. There is a pleasing symmetry here and long persistence in the mouth: easily his best 2013 rouge. Excellent.

Usually 30% new oak (his maximum) but only a tiny amount of oak in 2013. Two equal parcels: planted 1938 and 2000. Deep cherry red. Just a little reduced but with massive flirtatious ripe fruit. Great integrity. Very solid and promising. Hint of autumn undergrowth. Masses of energy. (JR)
