Score 93/100 · Drink 2029-2040, Angus Hughson, Vinous, Sep 2022

This 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon John Riddoch is densely packed with ripe fruit, and waves of red currant, blackcurrant and lifted violets, well integrated with a clove scented oak. Over time, some slightly jammier and licorice elements slowly unravel, shaped by firm, grainy tannins and freshened up by an edge of crisp acidity. Overall, there is good generosity and structure to support long cellaring.

The 2013 John Riddoch Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon is spicy, fine and mineral. It was a warm vintage in Coonawarra, aligned in some ways with the recent 2019 vintage. There is graphite and spice, charry fruit and brooding spice. There are also lovely leafy overtones here, and the wine is elegant and fine-boned. It is dark and moody but so fine, with a hint of black tea, chinotto and graphite. In terms of drinking the window, this is just peaking through the first frame. Feel free to start exploring the 2013s—they're very close to being ready, and there is a long, long way to go yet. Buckle up.
