(made from two seriously frosted parcels picked a full week later than the Bourgogne Pinot Noir): Dark red with ruby tones. Musky dark raspberry, mocha, licorice and violet on the nose and in the mouth, plus a hint of dark chocolate. Offers good mid-palate texture, then finishes with chewy, tongue-saturating tannins that come across as less ripe than those of the Bourgogne. Distinctly saline on the back end.

The 2016 Bourgogne Haut Cotes de Nuits Rouge was closed on the nose like the Bourgogne Rouge: dark, slightly broody black fruit with a touch of slate in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with sharp tannin, clearly more acidity than the Bourgogne rouge; sorbet-fresh with cassis and a hint of dates on the finish. Fine.
