Score 91/100 · Drink 2020-2040, David Schildknecht, Vinous, Apr 2020

From overwhelmingly botrytis-affected bunches in the Pichter and Ginsterlay vineyards, picked out near the end of harvest, this leads with prickly notes of radish and dried mushroom, behind which emerge very ripe strawberry, pear and fig, as well as decadent lily. The parfait-like palate is glycerol-rich and extremely delicate: an ideal frame for such ripe fruit and wafting inner-mouth floral perfume. This finishes with impressive persistence of both fruit and flower, if without the mineral dimension possessed by some other highly successful Später-Veit 2017s.

The 2017 Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Auslese is pretty sweet and piquant on nose and palate, both indicating clear Riesling, spicy botrytis and honey notes. The wine is round, refined, sweet, dense and elegant, with salty-piquant acidity and crystallin-mineral structure. The finish is concentrated and piquant as that from an Eiswein yet not as sweet. 7.5% alcohol. Tasted from AP 7 18 in May 2019.
