Among the Immich-Batterieberg single-vineyard bottlings of its vintage, this is the one that I found to have changed least nine months after bottling. The nose is piquantly dominated by lemon and kumquat peels against a background of toasted nuts. On the palate, there is a corresponding nuttiness, bitterness and sizzle that I am inclined to attribute to oxidative influence of both low sulfur and background botrytis. There are also hints of mango and overripe peach. The undeniably gripping finish adds peach kernel, raw ginger, pistachio and earthy rutabaga to the wine’s litany of piquant elements, along with a salinity that stimulates welcome salivation but isn’t accompanied by much outright juiciness. Hopefully this has yet to blossom and my prognosis of ageworthiness will prove too conservative.

From 100-year-old vines (which surround the Batterieberg monopole), the 2014 Enkircher Zeppwingert Riesling is a deep and subtle flavored Riesling with a rather smooth and silky, perfectly balanced, but finally very pure and stony Riesling with great finesse. Bottled with 11 grams of residual sugar, the Zeppwingert does not have the power of the Batterieberg, but the length is no less impressive. It seems even purer and finer, and is marked by a very delicate acidity and a lovely stimulating grip. Pure and mineral.
