Light cherry red. Tangy, like small, wild red berries. Relatively light on the palate but the fruit and the tannin/acid structure are in harmony. Not particularly long. (JH)

The 2017 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières 1er Cru, already in bottle, has a vibrant, spicy, rose petal and violet bouquet that is even more intense than the Aux Fournaux. The chalk/limestone terroir really shows through here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. It does not quite have the charm and crystalline quality of the Aux Fournaux, but is more masculine and structured, with a lovely marine element tincturing the dark berry fruit toward the chalky finish. Excellent.

The 2017 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières exhibits aromas of juicy cherries, rose petal, currant leaf, rich soil and warm spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and succulent palate, with melting tannins, juicy fruit and a sapid finish. The domaine's old vines in this superbly situated premier cru have put in a very strong showing this year, and like the Savigny AOC, this was already in bottle when I tasted it.
