Outpost's 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain emerges from the blocks that surround the winery site. Inky, deep and powerful, the 2014 hits the palate with massive depth and intensity. Black cherry, chocolate, mocha, spice and leather give the 2014 its full-throttle personality. There is a slightly roasted quality to the fruit and an overall feel of weight that makes the wine feel heavy.

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon (100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 20 months in 80% new French oak) shows not a trace of oak and has wonderfully sweet blueberry and blackberry fruit in the nose, along with some licorice, incense, and charcoal embers. The color is opaque to the rim, and the wine full-bodied, with the blue fruits dominating on the palate. It has a finish of a good 40-45 seconds. Tannins are moderate, but very sweet and well-integrated. It should drink well for 20 years or more.

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is lifted and aromatically expressive, with a bit more of a floral and red-fleshed profile than is typical for this wine, which is usually darker. There is a sense of classical austerity to the 2014 that needs to resolve itself. Like all of the 2014s here, I expect the Cabernet will put on a bit more flesh as it finishes its time in barrel.
