The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Malconsorts-Dessus 1er Cru has a lighter, airier bouquet than the Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Boudots, which is actually not that far away from this vineyard. The red fruit is underpinned by light granite scents. The linear, correct palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, the two-thirds whole bunches imparting a subtle earthiness on the finish. Just one 300-liter barrel, alas.

Nearly 50% whole bunch. Very small premier cru that touches Gaudichots, which Ben Leroux thinks it resembles. On the same calcareous seam. Will be bottled only in magnum. Barrel sample. Prettily scented with red fruit. Delicate and rather restrained on the nose. Opens up to a gorgeous fragrance, sweet red fruit with a note of spice. Deeply fruited, full in the mouth but still with a lightness of touch. Very fine tannins. Gets more and more complex with air. Fine, dry texture but the length is the perfumed fruit. Very long. Great harmony of delicate structure and pure fruit. (JH)
