Looking at the base village 2018 Volnay, it has a translucent ruby hue as well as a terrific array of ripe red (and some black) fruits as well as sous bois, sappy spring flowers, spice, and subtle earthy nuances. Medium-bodied on the palate, it's more mid-weight compared to the single vineyards, but the balance is spot on, it has ripe tannins, bright acidity, and outstanding length. It's just a beautiful, classic Volnay in every sense. It benefits from a decant and will be best with 2-4 years in the cellar and deliver the goods over the following decade or more.

The 2018 Volnay Village comes from several parcels. It has a very pure bouquet of wild strawberry, cranberry and light crushed stone aromas, all delivered with fine delineation. The palate is very well balanced with chalky tannins that frame the open-knit, pure red cherry and strawberry fruit, leading to an elegant, persistent finish. Joyful.

The 2018 Volnay Village reveals lovely aromas of dark berries, peonies and earthy forest floor. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, lively and succulent, with fine, powdery tannins and a mineral finish.

Six parcels from both the Pommard and Meursault sides of the appellation. Gives a classic Volnay, believes Fréderic Lafarge. Barrel sample of final blend. Mineral/stony dark-red fruit on nose and palate. Much sweeter and more gentle on the palate than I expected, almost creamy so that the tannins are covered. Structured but rounded and filled out with red fruit. Super-elegant village Volnay and long too. (JH)
