Domaine Ferret’s Clos des Prouges is situated on a cooler, east-facing limestone slope and is one of three top single-vineyard cuvées made at the historic Pouilly-Fuissé estate. The two-hectare vineyard is home to the estate’s oldest vines, planted in 1956. In the 2018 there’s a hint of smoky reduction at first, but this blows off to reveal ripe stone-fruit drizzled with honey. The oak (20% new) is well-integrated with the concentrated fruit which flirts with exoticism. It’s fleshy and full-bodied, yet with a mineral freshness driving the finish. This is open, expressive Chardonnay that speaks of its southern roots – and is brilliant value for money.

Pale colour, tight bouquet, more density than Le Clos, nothing exotic here, while the back of the palate fills out with a pleasing amplitude. Wait for the finely balanced, crisp finish.
Notes of citrus oil, struck match, wheat toast and ripe melon introduce the 2018 Pouilly-Fuissé Tête de Cru Clos des Prouges, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping wine that's delicate and open-knit despite its broad shoulders. It doesn't appear to have the same cut or concentration as Les Perrières, but it's a fine effort, and I suspect it will fill out with a little bottle age.
