Score 89-91/100 · William Kelley, Wine Advocate, Feb 2020

Aromas of green apple, waxy citrus rind, white flowers and clear honey introduce the 2018 Meursault 1er Cru La Pièce Sous Le Bois, a medium to full-bodied, tensile and incisive wine that's elegant and fragrant, concluding with a saline finish. From a parcel of old vines that Leroux purchased some years ago, this is always a fine cuvée.

Vines planted 1930. Same parcel as his red Blagny. Fermented in 300- and 600-litre barrels. Barrel sample. Herbal citrus and a little smoky. A real cool customer, there’s both a freshness and a density here. Definitely a salty character. The oak spice is super-subtle. Lovely precise and focused wine yet still with plenty of fruit. Creamy finish. (JH)
