Score 95/100 · Drink 2022-2037, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Sep 2019

The 2017 Pinot Noir Sous le Chêne is the most ethereal of the wines in this range. This block, on Monterey shale, yields a Pinot Noir built on aromatics, perfume and silky, red toned-fruit. Exotic floral and spice notes add nuance, but the Sous le Chêne is mostly a wine of lift and grace. The 2017 can be enjoyed on the young side, but it also appears to have much to offer with a bit of cellaring.

Pale to medium ruby, the 2017 Pinot Noir Sous le Chêne has a dust, orange peel, fresh cranberry and rhubarb-scented nose with pink peppercorn, tobacco leaf, blackberries, perfumed earth and dried flowers. The palate is light to medium-bodied with oodles of classic Pinot spice and flower nuances—woodsmoke, saline, citrus peel—with a firm frame of pixelated tannins and juicy freshness, finishing long and spiced. 99 cases were made.
