FINE+RARE Tasting Note, Jun 2020

Light, lifted floral perfumed nose with a little vinous tone too. Fruit is fresh - red in character - red plum redcurrant coulis, lots of acid freshness. Sandy rich tannins adds weight to the palate. Slight angular in structure, lacking richness and opulence preferring fresher style bordering on lean.

Cru bourgeois exceptionnel. 59% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot, 1% Cabernet Franc. Clayey gravel on limestone bedrock. Yield 44 hl/ha. Aged for 16 months, 35% new oak. 330,000 bottles. Medium garnet. Meaty and earthy aroma. Generous red and blue fruit in the palate. Broad and opulent. Tannins are plush yet well integrated with the lively acidity. Long, smoky finish. (FG)

The 2019 Lilian Ladouys offers ripe red berry fruit laced with pencil shavings and tobacco on the nose, but it feels just a little one-dimensional. The palate is better with ripe tannins, plenty of crisp black fruit, chalky in texture towards its sapid, quite uncompromising finish. For Claret die-hard fans. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

Tasted blind. Grey rim. Ripe fruit and a rather plush, velvety blend that’s very sweet and seductive. Definitely softer than the Médoc archetype. Purple fruits … A bit of alcohol on the end. (JR)
