FINE+RARE Tasting Note

Ripe, slightly sweaty nose of sweet leather and baked black plum and cherry pie, there is a delightful floral lift too. Unctuous palate, the tannins are fully resolved, even-set and expansive, ripe and beautifully integrated with the generous black cherry and fresh black plum fruit. There is great mineral underpinning too giving lots of freshness a moreish character. Very heady and succulent St Emilion.

49% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Franc, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon. Organic certified by FR-BIO-10. Deep garnet with some development at the rim. Notable mature aromas of cedary undergrowth and a slightly leathery texture. But the development shows fruit and tannins remaining in harmony. Smooth, compact, fresh on the long finish. (JH)

The 2019 Canon-la-Gaffelière is quite punchy and bold on the nose. Blackberry and raspberry fruit, cedar and mint emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded tannins, quite plush yet cohesive, fanning out towards the velvety finish with a brush of white pepper on the aftertaste. One of the more approachable Saint-Émilion wines in this vintage. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

Tasted blind. Sweet, exotic, black-fruited nose. Heady and extremely floral. Very distinctive! Candied rose petals. Rather nice! But not that intense. Rich and smooth. Long. (JR)
