The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru is one of the richer Caillerets, lively and quite spicy and offering scents of lemon thyme and orange zest. The palate has a rounded texture on the entry, and elderflower and black currant leaf infuse the citrus fruit. Tropical notes emerge toward the slightly honeyed finish. I wondered if this was picked too late, but more likely it’s a case of premox, so it is not rated. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

(these vines are about 35 years old; Bouzereau picked them first in 2017, on August 30; 25% new oak): Light, bright yellow. Soil-inflected scents of wild herbs, hazelnut, clove and nut oil, plus a whiff of musky reduction. Thick in the mouth, but showing good spicy lift and back-end firmness. A bit less harmonious today than the Perrières as this juicy, concentrated wine is both higher in acidity and a bit more phenolic. Finishes with a savory quality. According to Bouzereau, these vines are planted on SO4 rootstock but are not yet degenerating; the parcel, originally from the Chartron estate, is also the source for Yves Boyer's Le Cailleret.
