Score 91/100 · Drink 2021-2023, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, Jun 2021

The challenging 2017 vintage produced a riper 2017 Pago de Carraovejas with 94% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Merlot. The wine is a bit weaker and shows more marked by the élevage in barrel, with abundant tannins and a powerful palate where the fruit feels more fragile. Drink sooner rather than later. 636,000 bottles. In 2017, they didn't produce El Anejón or Cuesta de las Liebres.

Opaque ruby. Highly perfumed aromas of ripe cherry, boysenberry, floral oils and incense; subtle vanilla and woodsmoke accents build in the glass. Sweet and plush on the palate, offering intense dark fruit liqueur, violet pastille, mocha and spicecake flavors that spread out through the midpalate. Shows very good depth as well as energy, finishing with solid dark fruit thrust and velvety tannins that add gentle grip to the persistent finish.

This offers a wealth of ripe dark berries and plums on the nose with good purity. The palate has a very juicy and concentrated feel. The tannins are nicely groomed. This holds good shape and length. Drink or hold.
