The 2018 Monthélie Les Duresses has a tightly wound bouquet, the fruit a little darker than I find on the nascent 2019, yet still well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red berry fruit, quite compact and saline. A touch of black pepper enlivens the slightly broody finish. Cellar this for 2–3 years.

A ripe, fresh and attractively spicy nose reflects a variety of both red and dark pinot fruit nuances. The nicely voluminous and textured middle weight flavors possess a lovely sense of verve before terminating in a mildly rustic, indeed even robust, finish. I suspect that this will round into shape relatively quickly.

Lafon's 2018 Monthélie Les Duresses has turned out very well, bursting with aromas of sweet red berries, cherries, peonies and a subtle touch of oak. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with melting tannins and a generous core of succulent fruit.
