The 2016 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba is an attractive, if eccentric, wine. This is an especially floral, mid-weight Serralunga Barolo. Rose petal, lavender, sage, mint and blood orange run through a core of red/purplish berry fruit. There is a bit of volatile acidity that detracts from the wine's balance. Even so, the 2016 is intriguing.

Serralunga d’Alba. Grapes come from the Boschareto and Lirano vineyards. Parts of the vineyards are old vines (50 years) and a part was planted 27 years ago. Total skin maceration for 30 days, after which the wine was racked off and put back into stainless steel to undergo MLF and to stimulate a natural settling in order to put the wine into cask as bright as possible. Aged in 10–50 hl Garbellotto casks. 30,000 bottles produced. Palish ruby with watery rim. Subtle, sweetly perfumed red fruit with supporting notes of liquorice and spice. Earthy minerality. Elegant palate of savoury/sweet red fruit with a hint of malt. Succulent finish with a layer of powdery tannins. Gentle and supple, and seemingly without great depth, but very slow to emerge. No doubt this will age well. (WS)
