The 1973 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru was a real surprise for me and others since this is not a renowned vintage. Yet it has a winsome bouquet with lanolin and grilled walnut, flecks of white peach and Golden Delicious. It is mature but very alive. Likewise, the palate is fresh and surprisingly mineral-driven, fine weight with just a little oxidation towards the tangy, Anjou pear-tinged finish. Wonderful. It was one of the surprises at the Moon Bay dinner in Hong Kong.
