As usual, the 2020 Riesling Ayler Kupp Kabinett No. 5 is assigned to Lauer’s auctioned Kabinett. The tropicality noted from a number of other Lauer 2019s is accentuated here, with mango and papaya dominating, aptly supported by unapologetic sweetness and a creamy feel. For all of its alcoholic lightness, this gives a very lush impression. Smoky and stony notes serve for welcome counterpoint on a caressingly lingering finish, albeit one that is slightly diffuse and lacking the brightness or salinity of the ostensibly lesser No. 8 Kabinett. I would give this some time, though, for a clearer picture to emerge. Clearer in two senses: a better idea of the wine’s ultimate nature, but also (one hopes) greater transparency of flavor.

Full bottle 1,354 g. This will be offered in the Grosse Ring auction this year. Almost colourless. Smells a little sweet and glucose-y. (But I have just been tasting GGs from the same punctilious address.) Light and bright but much less distinctive than this producer's dry wines. Is his heart in it? Lacks the tingle factor for me, and I'm a huge fan of Kabinett Rieslings! But it may blossom… (JR)
A noble Kabinett with super-fine stone fruit and notes of fennel, rhubarb and kumquat. At once concentrated, juicy and racy, with a perfectly integrated touch of sweetness. Diamond-bright, crystalline finish. Drink or hold.
