Score 91/100 · Drink 2024-2039, Jeb Dunnuck, Apr 2024

Based on 82% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 Château Cap De Mourlin is a solid effort in the vintage. Ripe black cherries, darker berries, graphite, chocolate, and some classic Saint-Emilion minerality all define the aromatics, and it's medium-bodied, with a plump, rounded mouthfeel and ripe tannins. It will drink well for 15 years.

The 2021 Cap du Moulin has a savory nose that has lost some of the brightness and delineation that it promised from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with a lacquer of dark chocolate on the entry—smooth in texture with fine depth, though it does feel a bit pushed toward the finish, which detracts from its clarity.

The 2021 Cap de Mourlin is a soft, juicy wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. Blackberry, plum, spice, grilled herbs, chocolate, mocha and licorice all shape this expressive, mid-weight Saint-Émilion. Cap de Mourlin is on the more overt side for the year, but it is also very nicely done.

The 2021 Cap de Mourlin reveals aromas of dark berries, plums and undergrowth, followed by a medium-bodied palate with a fleshy attack that segues into an ample mid-palate, concluding with a somewhat firm, discreetly metallic finish.
