Score 88/100 · Drink 2003-2007, Pierre Rovani, Apr 2003

The floral, pear-scented 2001 Chassagne-Montrachet is light to medium-bodied, lush, fresh, and filled with smoky pears. This spicy, mineral-laced wine should be drunk over the next 4 years. To quote the ever-calm Michel Niellon, a man of few words, "There were no problems in 2001, I like the vintage." Having tasted his wines, I can see why. Some oak in evidence. Quite rich palate entry, then considerable acidity and even a bit of fizz. Subtantial, but a bit dull. (JR)
