The 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Damodes 1er Cru has a delightful, beautifully defined bouquet with red cherries, blackberry, cranberry and touches of tobacco. Real terroir expression here. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit mixed with fig and orange rind. The oak is nicely integrated and there is plenty of grip and presence on the finish. Excellent and great ageing potential to boot. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

Cask sample. Mid cherry red. Quite reluctant on the nose, more dusty/mineral than fruity. Some oak sweetness on the palate, surprisingly supple tannins, bit of chocolate, but there’s lovely dark fruit hiding underneath, giving depth and length in a savoury, spicy framework. (JH)
