The 2019 Pommard Grand Clos des Épenots 1er Cru offers raspberry, wild strawberry and light rose petal scents on the nose, just a light curry leaf note that emerges with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a peppery entry, raw tannins that frame insufficient red fruit that leaves the finish feeling hollow. I expected more.

Cask sample. Mid crimson. Darker and more savoury on the nose than the Vaumuriens and Fremiers, darker-fruited but lifted by sweetness of oak spice. Just a touch earthy (in a good way). Deep, chewy, compact tannins but not aggressive. Well hidden for the moment, with an attractive bite of freshness on the finish. (JH)
