The grapes for Damien Laureau's 2019 Les Genêts are grown on sandy soils over schist, giving a tenderness and richness of fruit. Matured on lees in barrels for 12 months, there's no mistaking the nutty, smoky influence of the oak over bruised apple fruit, rounding out the palate. It finishes well, offering sinew and structure, tidying and tightening up the palate. There's no mistaking the hand of the winemaker, which is evident at this stage but its schistose foundations provide the drive and frame in which this will age.

The 2019 Les Gênets is a powerful, reductive style of Savennières that has a sense of roundness but remains firm, focused with real drive. Damien Laureau lost 40% of his crop due to spring frosts leading to a concentrated and firm style. Expect mandarin flavors alongside red grapefruit. It's a powerful, intense wine from vines planted on sand over schist.
